List Sunday: Top Ten First Time Watched Movies for 2008

This is the last List Sunday of 2008 and what better way to go out then by putting together one of the most typical list around, a top movies list! But, this list has a bit of a twist. Instead of just concentrating on movies that came out this year I’ve comprised this list of movies that I saw for the firs time ever. No matter if they came out 20 years ago or just a couple months ago. Now, before any one bashes me for not having a particular movie on my list please remember that this is just for movies that I’ve seen this year. So certain movies, like The Dark Knight, may not be on here because I haven’t seen them yet.

10. Employee of the Month

9. Hancock/I Am Legend

8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe/Prince Caspian

7. Akira

6. Sweeny Todd

5. Juno

4. Four Chirstmases

3. Quantum of Solace

2. Wall-E

1. Wanted

As always I asked those over at Friendfeed to tell me about their favorite movies that they saw for the first time this year. And like always, they came through with many opinions.

I finally watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind all the way from start to finish this year. I really liked it. -- Yolanda

I watched Benjamin Button on Christmas day. -- Bob

I saw Vertigo for the first time this year. It was pretty awesome. -- Mark Wilson

I also saw Valley Girl for the first time and I loved it. Great soundtrack too. -- Mark Wilson

Mark- Vertigo is an amazing flick! I liked Frost/Nixon a lot. I loved Wanted. Really, really liked The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, which I finally got to see. But I really loved the Lives of Others most of all. -- Abby Martin

I saw only one movie the whole year. (except for the pirated downloads that I plaid in the background and didn’t really watch because I could tell they sucked) the movie was “The Dark Knight”. I haven’t seen any of the Oscar season movies yet and I haven’t seen Iron Man, but I was not drawn to any media this year. -- Ⓝ〄ⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂ〄Ⓝ

Benjamin Button, Death Note, and Love Actually -- Shevonne Polastre

Iron Man, Wall-E… -- Alex Scoble

Billy Wilder is always great…. I thought we were talking about recent movies -- Ⓝ〄ⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂ〄Ⓝ

Umbrellas Of Cherbourg was my standout, classic movie that I absolutely loved, and was kicking myself for not seeing it before. -- Jason Kaneshiro

Knocked Up, Happy Feet, Dan in Real Life, A Night at the Museum, Woman Though Art Loosed…I think those are the only movies I watched this year that I hadn’t watched before. Oh that movie with Steve Carrel where he builds the Ark. Only movie worth watching out of all of these is A Night at the Museum. -- Anika Malone

American Psycho -- Mitch

oh… so sweet. http://www.hulu.com/watch/4617… Billy Wilder’s “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes” is free online for all -- Ⓝ〄ⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂ〄Ⓝ

APOCALYPSE NOW. Heavy stuff. -- Steven Perez

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels -- Ian May

Abby, The Lives of Others is one of my favourite movies from this decade. It was incredible. It’s sad that, Ulrich Mühe, the main star died last year. He was amazing in that film. -- Mark Wilson

I saw both ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘American Beauty’ this year. And they were both extremely good. -- Rahul Das

Mark, Vertigo and the original Charade (not that Damon/Newton hot mess) are probably my two favorite thrillers ever. -- Anika Malone

Wall-E, Iron Man. -- Just Katie

http://www.hulu.com/watch/4617… Billy Wilder’s “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes” is an interesting movie… but mediocre. not bad either…,but I was surprised it was Billy Wilder’s. funny scene involving Dr Watson and a bunch of gays in the Russian ballet in the beginning. seems like Wilder’s “Some like It Hot” had influences here… but all in all this film is not as good as Barry Levinson’s classic “Young Shermlock Holmes” -- Ⓝ〄ⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂ〄Ⓝ

Superbad, Planet Earth series, The Kite Runner, Across the Universe, Stardust, Goodfellas, Mr. Brooks, Transformers, Ella Enchanted, The Borne Ultimatum, 300, Once, Sharkwater… All great and worth seeing. -- Mark

So what are your favorite movies that you saw for the first time this year?
